A Review of DHI ConNextions 2018

Have you had a chance to catch your breath?  What an amazing few days in Baltimore at DHI ConNextions.  One of the best things about being in the Door and Hardware Industry is the fact it’s a relatively small group of people. Typically, at one point or another in our careers, we have either worked with or have known of one another for many years.  So, when we attend and exhibit at ConNextions it really is like a family reunion.

Hager had a lot of representation both from St. Louis headquarters, including the Hager Family, and our wonderful sales representatives.

Wednesday many team members attended the keynote presentation “Beyond Tragedy: Response and Recovery in a School Based Crisis”. The speaker was Michele Gay, a mother and former teacher, who helped founded Safe and Sound: A Sandy Hook Initiative.  It was a powerful presentation about her day on December 14, 2012, when her daughter was one of 26 people who was shot at Sandy Hook Elementary school.  Her strength and courage were felt throughout the room.  Her words reignited our mission to provide great products at a fair price with exceptional customer service to keep occupants of buildings safe and secure.

Building on High Standards

Hager Companies continues to enhance production capabilities in our Montgomery, AL manufacturing facility. With attention focused on our Threshold and Weatherstrip product line, we have recently introduced new products including the 710S Adhesive Mullion Seal and 900 Series Hospitality series of products. We remain committed to dedicating resources and capital to bring our customers quality products, in the timeframe the marketplace demands.

Further internal improvements have included implementation of upgraded racking systems, a brand new production layout and the execution of new packing lines. We continue to build on the high standards started by Charles Hager over 168 years ago by improving the quality of our products and services.

The new in-house anodizing line and machining center efficiencies that Josh Hager revealed last year at DHI ConNextions are fully functional. The Roton® Continuous Geared hinges are being constructed with simultaneously milled bearing slots with consistent and measurable accuracy. This allows the bearings to seat perfectly and operate smoothly across the entire hinge for the life of the opening.  We will continue striving to reduce lead times and improve quality in order to further support to our valued partners.

Thanksgiving 2016

Thanksgiving has arrived and the year is almost over.  We will be closed November 24th & 25th so our team members can enjoy Thanksgiving and a long weekend with family and friends.

Before the R&R&E (rest, relaxation and eating) begins, we want to start it off with some gratitude. We have a lot of people to be grateful for.

  • Our many team members who show up every day with the willingness to serve our customers with a smile .
  • Our representatives that go the extra mile, in the car, on foot, and always with our customers.
  • The Hager family who provide a first-class workplace and respect their ancestor’s traditions while moving the company forward.
  • The building communities where we share knowledge and successes.
  • And of course, we are grateful for you. Without your loyalty and dedication Hager Companies would not be celebrating its 167th year!

We hope you are able to take some time to relax and enjoy the long weekend with whatever makes you happy!

Happy Thanksgiving!

International Sales Meeting

With 167 years of history in St. Louis sometimes it’s easy to forget that Hager is a international company.  We have projects going on all over the world, from the Grand Egyptian Museum currently being built in Cairo to the completed Sheraton Zhanjiang Minda Hotel in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province in China.

Our Vice President of International Sales, James Stokes, has a great team of international sales representatives that travels the globe. Two weeks ago they gathered in St. Louis for their sales meeting.

A lot was discussed in the two day meeting.  From a business brief to detailed product line and technical training from our engineering team, tech support crew and product managers and, of course, taking time to catch up with the Hagers.

DHI ConNextions 2016 Part II

DHI-2014_BShockley_RHagerDHI ConNextions 2016 is next week and we are excited for a number of reasons. First and foremost we always like to connect with our customers to hear how they are, how their year is going and share our new products. Many of our independent sales representatives attend and it is an opportunity to exchange ideas on products and services, making sure we are meeting our customers needs.

We take safety and security seriously and in order to service our customers it is imperative we stay up-to-date on the latest building, fire, ADA codes, etc. Our team members are always interested in the education sessions that DHI offers.

On Thursday, May 5th at 8:30 AM DHI members will have the opportunity to hear about the new changes to DHI at “Celebrating Our Industry – Dedicated to You!” The industry has changed dramatically 8 years ago and we have a new normal.  We’re looking forward to hearing how DHI will assist its members in the future.

DHI Faces – Johnston Hager

Johnston Hager, Director Residential Sales & Marketing, is the DHI Face for this month’s Door & Hardware Magazine.  We are proud of Johnston’s accomplishments and look forward to working with him to continue to grow the Hager brand.

____

Johnston_Hager_Family_Portraits_0715_006

DHI MEMBER SINCE:  2010, but it seems like since birth!

OCCUPATION:  Director of Residential Sales and Marketing

CHILDHOOD AMBITION:  Be a professional golfer … schlepplin’ hardware on the side.

FIRST JOB:  Working as a merchandiser for an Anheuser Busch distributor. In other words, stocking the beer shelves in multiple grocery stores every day.

WHAT LED YOU TO OUR INDUSTRY:  The five generations of Hagers before me!

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL MOMENT:  For a family member to work at Hager Companies, we have a policy that you must work outside of the business for a minimum of three years. I hated this rule at the time, but I know it helped shape who I am today and am very grateful for the policy.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE:  Being a sixth generation family member in the business, you feel quite a bit of pressure. Thankfully I have two of my first cousins – Josh Hager and August Hager – here every day and we make a great team. Communication is the key. We are all so busy but at least three times a week the family has lunch together and we’re always discussing how we can grow the business.

GUILTY PLEASURE: Golf and fly fishing

MENTOR/HERO:  Other than my mom, Carol, my dad, Ralph, and my wife, Amanda, I would have to say that the late Eric Klein was a key mentor when I began my career at Hager. I miss him every day.

BEST ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED:  If you are unsure, don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know.”

BEST ADVICE YOU NEVER RECEIVED:  Customer are not interruptions of our work; they are the reason for it.

HOW HAS YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH DHI SUPPORTED YOUR CAREER?:  DHI is a great resource for education and professional networking. The annual conNextions show also provides an opportunity for me to meet and speak with our customers one on one, which is important to understand how we best can serve them.

___

Johnston, along with his cousins, August and Josh, and his dad, Ralph, will be at DHI conNextions in Orlando this year. Stop by Booth 431 to say hello.

Team Member Profile – Sharon Rainwater

Sharon celebrated 25 years with Hager in February of 2016, which is quite an accomplishment!  Sharon started with Hager Co. in February of 1991 and currently holds the position of Assistant Customer Service Manager.

Sharon.Rainwater

In Sharon’s own words:

Childhood ambition: Loved music, but chose to be an Administrative Assistant like my mom.

First job:  Steak N Shake.

What led you to the hardware industry:  I was looking for an Administrative Assistant job and Hager had an opening. I was hired by Steve Tenholder to work as an Administrative Assistant for the Marketing Department. I was then asked to work for members of the Hager family a few years later. At that time, Warren Hager was responsible for the Roton Continuous Hinge product line. When he was out of the office, I used to take phone calls and started asking questions about the product. I also worked for Susie Wiegand who would receive phone calls from certain customers on Architectural and Residential products.

Proudest professional moment: When I succeeded in my job at hand and was promoted for my efforts.

Biggest challenge: Learning locks and masterkeying.

Mentor/Hero: My Grandma.

Best advice you ever received: That life is a challenge and you should never stop trying to be a better .person.

Best advice you never received: If you make a mistake, own it and move on. Don’t blame others.

Guilty pleasure: Chocolate.

We are so glad Sharon is on the Hager team, leading with her knowledge and 100% dedication.  Thanks for your hard work and fortitude Sharon!

Hinged on Success by Alan Dorich

Bob Wilkins, our Director of Marketing and Product Development, was approached by WDI Magazine a few months ago. The article below ran in the WDI Magazine, Wholesale & Distribution International, Spring 2015 Volume 2 and is reprinted here with permission.

Hinged on Success by Alan Dorich

Whenever you pass through a doorway, there’s a chance that you’re walking past a product from Hager Cos. “You can’t walk through many door openings without seeing a Hager logo on a hinge,” Director of Marketing Bob Wilkins says.

Based in St. Louis, Hager Cos. offers locks, door controls, exit devices, electronic hardware, hinges, trim and auxiliary products, thresholds, weather stripping products and sliding door hardware. Founder Charles Hager started the company in 1849, after buying a blacksmith’s shop in St. Louis. More …
