Team Member Profile – Sheryl Simon, CSI, CDT – Manager, Architectural Specification Consultants

Sheryl Simon has been with Hager Companies for 13 years and was recently promoted to Manager, Architectural Specifications Consultants. We sat down with Sheryl to ask her a few questions.

Childhood AmbitionI was always interested in design. (I’m not sure if it’s an ambition or an obsession.) Even as a young child I was always re-arranging the furniture. My parents never knew what to expect when they came home. 

First JobWorking at a very busy ice cream stand. The lines seemed to never end but it was fun interacting with all the customers. 

What led you to the hardware industry: I married into it and very quickly became a hardware geek. 

Proudest professional momentWhen I passed my CDT. It is a very difficult exam and required a lot of studying.

Biggest challengeMy biggest challenge today is keeping up with technology, particularly the advances in electronic access control. 

Guilty pleasureChocolate and home decor stores.

Favorite book/movieMy favorite movie is “It’s a Wonderful Life”. It reminds me that our life’s most important work is often work we never planned to do.

Mentor/heroI have had many mentors over the years and I am thankful for all of them. 

Best advice you ever received: When one door closes another one opens. It’s a pun on the industry but very appropriate.

Best advise you never receivedTrust your instincts.

What advice you would share with someone entering this industry:  The construction industry is one of the most exciting and diverse industries. It is forever changing so never stop learning and be receptive to change. If it’s something you want to pursue go for it! I’m glad I did.

From the Two Twelve Clayton Case Study
“This project was interesting to me because I’d never done a high-rise project before, and I learned a lot through the process. Stair towers in a 26-story building are much different than they are in a four-story office building and they require different types of hardware. Sheryl got into the details with me to help me understand what was needed and why. As architects, we wanted to make the doors as ‘invisible’ as possible. We worked with Sheryl on concepts to design doors that functioned to satisfy code requirements, yet were the least disruptive to the design.”

SCIP and CONSTRUCT – 2018

Next week, several members of the Hager team will be heading to Long Beach, California for the annual Specifications Consultants in Independent Practice meeting, better known as SCIP, and the CONSTRUCT Education and Exhibits show.

We always have a great time at both events and it gives us a chance to chat with specification writers to learn how we can better help their processes and solve any pain points.

Case Study – Two Twelve Clayton

Two Twelve Clayton – St. Louis’s Largest Multi-Use Project in 30 Years

The City of Clayton is situated just west of St. Louis, Mo., making it a suburb of The Gateway City – but it is much more than that. Clayton is the seat of St. Louis County and the activity in and around the courthouse attracts lawyers, county officials and business leaders to its center on a daily basis.

Clayton’s redevelopment efforts began in the early 1990s with the creation of a Downtown Master Plan, which was revised in 2010. The plan’s introduction states, “Over the last decade, Clayton has experienced significant investment in its central business district, ranging from the Crescent to the Centene Headquarters to the MetroLink stations. With several more projects planned or under construction, Downtown Clayton has become an area with the potential for significant real estate development.”

Swing Clear Hinges

Do you have anything lying around your house or garage that you’ve held onto just knowing you were going to use it in a project someday?

Dennis Elledge with DE | SL Architecture Interiors inherited some black walnut wood that he knew would be perfect for a project – someday. Some 20 years later, and after a few moves, the perfect opportunity presented itself.

After DE | SL Architecture moved into a new space they realized they needed some additional storage. There was a perfect nook at the end of a hallway but open shelves would look messy. Dennis realized the time had come to use the black walnut to make a door that not only would be practical but would also be a statement piece.

Since this door opening wouldn’t be permanent thought needed to go into how to install the door that would not leave too much damage to the walls and allow the door to be removed when they vacate the leased space. The dimensions of the end of the hallway were 4’8″ wide x 9’3″ high. Having a door that size would be cumbersome so Dennis came up with the idea to make a 4’8″ x 6’10” door with a 2’5″ transom. Luckily he had enough of the black walnut to make it work. But the door also needed to be able to swing out of the opening so Dennis called on Sheryl Simon, CSI ,CDT, our Senior Architectural Specification Consultant to discuss possible solutions utilizing door hardware.

Come Two by Two. A Look Inside Noah’s Ark

Come Two by Two. A Look Inside Noah’s Ark, by Ginny Powell

Tucked into the “All American City” of Lakeland, Florida, is not just a community, but the realization of a dream initiated by a small group of parents nearly 20 years ago. It’s called The Village at Noah’s Landing.

Nearly two decades ago, a small group of parents of adult children with special needs met while watching their children take part in sporting activities. They began talking with each other about what would happen to their kids if they were no longer around. Who would oversee their care?

Their worries were further reinforced when they discovered that the options for care in and around Lakeland were extremely limited. But instead of becoming defeated, these five sets of parents took action. Big action. In 1997, they created Noah’s Ark of Central Florida.

The first homes were built between 2002 and 2007 and are located near downtown Lakeland. Called Noah’s Nest, this clustering of four houses is home to 17 residents living independently with the support of their fellow residents, family, and friends.

A Dream of Building a Community
While Noah’s Nest was a great start, the dream was always to build a bigger community for adults with developmental disabilities. The Villages of Noah’s Landing, with Phase 1 scheduled to open later this summer, is precisely that.

Phase 1 can accommodate up to 132 developmentally disabled residents and only takes up a fraction of the property’s 62 acres. When all phases are complete, the community will offer a wide selection of social, recreational, educational and vocational choices, and provide for the health care needs of its residents.

The Growing Popularity of Sliding Doors by Ginny Powell

You don’t have to look far to notice the popularity of sliding doors and sliding barn-style doors. This trend is hitting the commercial and residential markets with gusto, and according to the experts we spoke to, the movement will continue to climb with no sign of letting up in the coming years.

While the use of sliding doors has steadily increased each year, the emerging trend itself is more about the expansion of use – how designers are finding new ways to integrate them into spaces.

This growth has also sparked a revolution in door and hardware manufacturing to meet the growing demand. For example, just a few years ago, a sliding barn-style door needed to be custom designed and built, but today the number of pre-fabricated doors on the market continues to rise. Accompanying hardware is evolving as well, offering many more finishes, styles and durability options – giving architects and designers a nice variety from which to choose.

Up until recently, the most common applications for sliding doors included healthcare and office spaces. While those segments are still strong, sliding doors are replacing traditional ones in several new areas.

Introducing – Mark Hoialmen

Please join us in welcoming Mark Hoialmen as an architectural specification consultant for Hager in the Georgia area.

Mark began his career in Atlanta in the advertising industry working with manufacturers from semiconductors to apparel. Later, as Director of Marketing for a production software firm, he delivered the company’s newest Windows conversion in manufacturing software to the dental lab industry. An opportunity to start a business as a group health insurance benefits broker was presented and Mark began providing group insurance coverage to software companies and a few architect firms in Georgia for the next 9 years.

Mark decided on a new course after selling his company to a national brokerage firm and opened his own representative company in the acoustic treatment industry. Now working for Hager, Mark has nine AIA accredited presentations for architectural firms and a specification writing team behind him to help with door hardware specs.

Mark lives in the North Atlanta area with his wife Mady and their 14 year old son Wyatt.

Archispeak – A podcast for architects

There are a lot of publications and trade groups who would like us to advertise in their magazine, either digital or print and sometimes both! While we think all are worthwhile our goal is to support our partners while broadening the Hager brand.  Our partners include distributors, facilities managers, end users, general contractors and architects.

Through our social media platforms we follow several architects in order to promote and share their services and projects. However there are three architects that caught our eye when they decided to try something new. They started a podcast called Archispeak for “all things architecture” by architects, in late 2012.  The hosts are Evan Troxel, Neal Pann and Cormac Phalen.  We’ve been following them for a while.

They talk about everything! Really – from premature renderation to architects and egos, nothing is sacred. They also work hard to provide a resource to emerging architects. We were thrilled when they picked up a steady sponsor in ARCAT.

ARCAT, in case you don’t know, provides free building products specifications. We hear from architects all the time how difficult writing hardware specs are so in order to try to simplify their work load our specifications are listed on ARCAT’s website.

We had been thinking about sponsoring a few shows for a while but needed it to be the right time. For the next few months we have a convergence of events happening so we felt this was it. Episode #70 is out now. There is a special opportunity for listeners of the show if you are attending CONSTRUCT or the Texas Society of Architect trade shows but you have to listen to the podcast to find out what it is.

In the meantime thanks Evan, Neal and Cormac for providing great content that everyone in the AEC community can learn from.

Women in Construction

We join the world in celebrating Women in Construction Week March 1-7th and International Women’s Day March 8th.

We have many women working at Hager Companies. Some have been here for over 40 years while others are just starting out in their careers. All contribute daily with their hard work, passion and fortitude. Here are just two of the fabulous women at Hager Companies in their own words.

The National Association of Women in Construction celebrates its Women in Construction (WIC) Week March 1st – 7th!!!

Hager Companies is a NAWIC member company.  Under our corporate membership, I am the appointed representative for Hager. You may be asking yourself, “I thought Hager was a manufacturing company?” We are a manufacturing company but we provide construction related services/products to the construction industry. I am the Safety and Environmental Supervisor for Hager. Prior to working at Hager, my ex-husband and I were self-employed in the construction industry. It was very difficult and very competitive. It was challenging for me because construction was a male dominated industry and most men did not want to discuss details of the jobs with me (this was 25 years ago too). I look back now and consider those times as learning experiences that have helped make me who I am.  

I can relate to the challenges the women in construction face every day. Being in NAWIC has helped me understand the needs women have and the struggles they face in meeting those needs. Even when women have strong partners many still have this overwhelming need to be that traditional woman that everyone perceives; care giver, soccer mom, team mom, caring friend, etc…Women in construction feel they have even more to prove to themselves and their co-workers. Building a network with other women in construction provides a foundation to build on.  NAWIC members are all over the country and just phone call or email away. The core values of NAWIC are: Believe in Ourselves, Persevere with the Strength of our Convictions, and Dare to Move to New Horizons. Join me this week in celebrating WIC Week and encourage a woman you know to believe in herself!

I started out coordinating service calls for a family owned overhead door company. As the business grew and branched out into hollow metal doors/frames and hardware I made the progression into sales. This was the beginning of what would become a lifelong career in the building industry.

Throughout the years I continued increasing my construction knowledge by working as a project manager for local door/frame and hardware suppliers. I was always a supporter of Hager products so when I learned Hager was expanding their product offerings and were looking for experienced hardware representatives; I made the transition from distribution to manufacturing. 

Three years later Hager grew again by adding a specification department and I had the opportunity to help develop that department and be part of a new era at Hager. 

I have always been interested in design so meeting architects and creative people is a great fit for me. I enjoy sharing Hager product knowledge as well as finding solutions to unique door and hardware conditions.

When I began my career over 20 years ago, there were very few women in the Construction industry. I am happy to say that trend has changed considerably. I feel that women are taken more seriously today however, regardless of your gender, extensive product knowledge as well as knowledge of the construction process is a must particularly when consulting with architects, specifiers and end users. 

I am thankful for the opportunities that I have been given and would encourage any women looking for a challenging career to consider the construction industry.
