DHI MEMBER SINCE:  2010, but it seems like since birth!

OCCUPATION:  Director of Residential Sales and Marketing

CHILDHOOD AMBITION:  Be a professional golfer … schlepplin’ hardware on the side.

FIRST JOB:  Working as a merchandiser for an Anheuser Busch distributor. In other words, stocking the beer shelves in multiple grocery stores every day.

WHAT LED YOU TO OUR INDUSTRY:  The five generations of Hagers before me!

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL MOMENT:  For a family member to work at Hager Companies, we have a policy that you must work outside of the business for a minimum of three years. I hated this rule at the time, but I know it helped shape who I am today and am very grateful for the policy.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE:  Being a sixth generation family member in the business, you feel quite a bit of pressure. Thankfully I have two of my first cousins – Josh Hager and August Hager – here every day and we make a great team. Communication is the key. We are all so busy but at least three times a week the family has lunch together and we’re always discussing how we can grow the business.

GUILTY PLEASURE: Golf and fly fishing

MENTOR/HERO:  Other than my mom, Carol, my dad, Ralph, and my wife, Amanda, I would have to say that the late Eric Klein was a key mentor when I began my career at Hager. I miss him every day.

BEST ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED:  If you are unsure, don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know.”

BEST ADVICE YOU NEVER RECEIVED:  Customer are not interruptions of our work; they are the reason for it.

HOW HAS YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH DHI SUPPORTED YOUR CAREER?:  DHI is a great resource for education and professional networking. The annual conNextions show also provides an opportunity for me to meet and speak with our customers one on one, which is important to understand how we best can serve them.

Johnston, along with his cousins, August and Josh, and his dad, Ralph, will be at DHI conNextions in Orlando this year. Stop by Booth 431 to say hello.

NFMT 2016 – Recap

We are back from the NFMT Show in Baltimore and as always, we had a great time. This is a terrific show to see, and listen to the people who install and maintain our hardware.

The Hager Team arrived in Baltimore Monday to bright blue skies.  After a stop to drop off luggage at the Hilton Inner Harbor we headed to the Baltimore Convention Center to organize the product displays, giveaways and literature in our booth.

National Facilities Management and Technology – NFMT Conference

We are heading to Baltimore next week for the NFMT show! We really enjoy this show as the attendees are facility management and maintenance personnel who get down and dirty with our hardware. The input and feedback we receive from this show is vital to our engineers and product managers.

This year we are bringing our brand new 8200 Series Economy Low Energy Power Operator along with our touchless actuator. Gordon Holmes, who is the Product Manager for this line, will be there to answer questions and demonstrate the product.

Texas Society of Architects Show

This show gets bigger and bigger each year, which isn’t surprising since it’s in Texas.  We’ve had such great results in years past we sent our Director of Product Development and Marketing, Bob Wilkins, to Dallas to meet the attendees. With our local architectural representative, Debra Powers-Wafford and our Regional Manager, Adam Bucko, the Hager booth was well stocked with knowledge, products and literature.

Unexpected

We exhibited at the Texas Society of Architects show last week. It was a great show and we will share more about our experience later. What we didn’t expect was to find a custom door company that is incredibly unique.

Hylda Rodriguez is an artist that designs and hand makes doors. Ms. Rodriguez stopped by our booth to look at our new stainless steel barn door hardware display. She extended an invitation to drop by her booth to see a few of the doors she custom made. Stunning. Beautiful. Unique. Those were just a few of the words that came to mind when we saw the two doors she brought to the show. The pictures below don’t do them justice.

To see how the 2nd door was created please click here

Craftsmanship still counts in this fast paced world and we hope you check out the Hylda Rodriguez website to see more of her designs.

CONSTRUCT St. Louis CSI Chapter Host Party 2015

CSI Members know how to party and this year’s Host Chapter Event proved they love being big kids too!

Dubbed the Night of Mirth, Mystery and Mayhem, the St. Louis CSI Planning Committee did a fantastic job at choosing one of the most unique places in St. Louis – City Museum. If you aren’t familiar with City Museum, it is housed in a 600,000 square foot former international shoe company in downtown. Bob Cassilly, an internationally acclaimed artist, sparked the idea. He and his crew began constructing the museum from the nuts and bolts (along with tiles, chimneys, and planes) of the city, literally. Their motto “always building” has been true since their opening in 1997.

1st Annual CONSTRUCT Young Professionals / Student Day

There has been a lot of recent discussion on the sparsity of young professionals in the AEC community. This is evident when looking at the attendance of the Door and Hardware Institute (DHI) and Construction Specification Institute (CSI) monthly meetings and annual trade shows. We need to encourage more young professionals to enter the many fields offered in the architectural, engineering & construction industries.

Cindy Barrand with Informa, who presents the CONSTRUCT show in conjunction with the CSI Annual Convention, decided to do something about it. She created a special package for young professionals (max 35 years of age) and students that offered education, a full day specifically designed for them, networking events and a few social occasions, spanning 4 days of the convention all for a reduced price.

SCIP – Specifications Consultants in Independent Practice

When CONSTRUCT announced last year that the 2015 convention would be held in St. Louis we were thrilled. We knew we had a great opportunity to show off our hometown and Hager Companies.

We were lucky enough to entice two groups to our headquarters for a tour.  The first was held yesterday and by all accounts it was a success.

Last year, through connections on Twitter, we were able to reach out to the President of SCIP, Dave Stutzman, to offer a tour of our facility and dinner for any interested SCIP members.  SCIP holds their annual meeting the day before CONSTRUCT opens. Our BHMA Testing Lab and Engineering Lab are located at our St. Louis headquarters and we felt both might offer noteworthy learning opportunities to the SCIP members.

National Facilities Management and Technology (NFMT) Conference and Expo – 2015

Earlier this month we exhibited at the NFMT Conference in Baltimore. Most of the attendees are facility maintenance personnel who use and maintain our products on a daily basis. The information we get back from this show is extremely valuable to us.

Some think trade shows are out of touch – and that may be true in some cases – but not for NFMT. We will be back next year!

Here are a few photos from the show.

Love that NFMT was all over Social Media!
